It becomes a magical moment when a singer discovers his own true identity where the unique quality of the voice unites perfectly with his newly chosen repertoire. Bass-baritone LARS FOSSER is living proof of this as he merges his warm, noble and glorious sound with the elemental grandeur of Wagner and German Opera.
2024 brings a whole range of new challenges. From singing his first Gunther in "Götterdämmerung" by Wagner in Coburg, where he will also sing his first Michele in "Il Tabarro" by Puccini, as well as The sheriff, Jack Rance in "La Fanciulla del West", also by Puccini, at the Hedeland Opera, and Covering the role of The Dutchman in Wagners "Der Fliegende Holländer"at the Teatro Regio Torinom the year brings many other opportunities.. Roles in 2023 concisted of Hagen/Fasolt in Kammeropera Helsingørs “The Ring in a night” and Baron Scarpia in “Tosca” with LTSO and Orest in “Elektra” (Strauss). 2022 included Vodnik in “Rusalka (Dvorak), The Emperor of China in “La Rossignol” (Strawinsky), Amonasro in “Aida” (Verdi) and Marsk Stig in “Drot og Marsk”
(Heise).
Lars Fosser's musical and theatrical heritage reflect his life with a stage director father, and a singer mother. His artistic upbringing introduced him to a long and loving relationship with Grand Opera, intimate lieder, and even American show tunes. Early on his exuberant performances in such magnificent roles as Verdi’s Rigoletto, Nabucco, Posa in Don Carlos ,Conte di Luna in Il Trovatore, Germont in La Traviata and Don Carlo in Ernani, as well as Puccini’s Scarpia in Tosca – allowed audiences to foresee the magnificence coming later in Wagner.
Lars Fosser has sung under the baton of such renowned conductors as Jukka-Pekka Saraste, Prof. Rolf Reuter, Giordano Bellincampi, Thomas Dausgaard. He has also worked with distinguished stage directors like Prof. Götz Friedrich, George Tabori, Kasper Holten, Francisco Negrin, Katharina Thalbach.
Lars Fosser is a frequent concert artist thrilling audiences in major venues such as Carnegie Hall in New York, Danish Radio Symphony Hall, as well as the Tivoli Symphony Hall in Copenhagen, Mercedes
Halle in Berlin and Braunschweig grosses Kulturhaus, with such fine orchestras as Staatskapelle Berlin, Staatskapelle Braunschweig, the Copenhagen Philharmonic, Danish National Radio Symphony. His interpretations of Mephisto in Schumann’s “7 Szenen aus Goethe’s Faust” as well as soloist in Beethoven’s 9th Symphony were broadcast live on Danish National Radio.
He is a laureate of several international singing competitions, taking Prizes at the Kammeroper Schloss Rheinsberg International Competition; the Center for Contemporary Opera International Competition; the LYRA International Singing Competition in New York. He is recipient of the Audience Choice Award while engaged as the leading baritone with the Stadttheater Görlitz, Germany.
